Bed bugs can be found anywhere. They are not a sign of uncleanliness and they aren’t attracted to dirt and grime. Travel is the most commonly recognized source of infestation. Bed bugs “hitchhike” on people, luggage, or other personal items. They can also come from boxes – whether from online shopping or in person!

While they are not known to transmit or spread disease, they do bite humans, causing itchy, irritating bites. There can be allergic reactions to the bites, ranging from mild to life-threatening. There can also be secondary infections of the bites.

While you can treat bed bug infestations yourself with over-the-counter chemicals, it is advisable to hire a professional, both for detection and treatment. They know where they are likely to hide and they are knowledgeable about the habits and life-cycle of bed bugs.

Canine inspections outmatch human inspections because visual inspections are unreliable. Using scientifically proven methods, dogs have an accuracy rate of 95% whereas a visual inspection, even by trained pest control operators, are estimated to only be about 35% accurate. Besides the accuracy of the canines, they are also able to complete an inspection in a fraction of the time of a visual inspection, with virtually no disruption to the home or business.

Because a dog has such a keen sense of smell, they detect the presence of the odor from live bed buds and viable eggs in places that a person can’t see. Additionally, the dogs are trained to only identify bed bugs, so they don’t alert on others scents such as mold or other insects. An inspection by a dog is quick, accurate and non-invasive. A pest control specialist could take hours to do an inspection, but a dog can do their inspection in a matter of minutes.

Our dogs and their handler are trained by J&K Canine Academy, the only training facility using scientiBcally proven training methods for the detection of live bed bugs and viable eggs. All teams are certiBed by the National Entomology Scent Detection Canine Association (NESDCA). We train regularly with live bed bugs and attend advanced canine workshops to ensure handler and canines keep up with current techniques. We re-certify annually to be sure our standards remain at the highest level to ensure the best possible inspection.
